TEXAS TROPHY TROUT FISHING is base on a lot factors such as time of year, water clarity, currents, wind direction, big trout lures natural baits, stealth hooks, lines and leaders used to catch these very beautiful elusive magnificent fish. Of all the above factors, the single MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR is well kept secret of "exactly where" to catch them, down to areas smaller than a tennis court in the bay, or in some cases, in areas smaller than the area of a bed of a regular size truck in the surf or on the jetties. For over five decades I have logged in as much time as anyone and a lot more than most fishing the Galveston Bay Complex, San Luis Pass, and Roll Over Pass. I have logged in more time fishing the Galveston jetties, the Galveston Beachfront, and the Surf than any other fishing guide alive or dead. Over the years I have kept very detailed records on the movement and migration patterns of these large caliber trout. Thousands of hours spent exploring the waters of the Galveston Bay Complex, the Galveston surf, and Galveston jetties has enable me to accumulate a unsurpassed inventory of the most well kept secrets of big trout spots on the Upper Texas Coast, which I call "PAITITI SPOTS"---The definition of a "Paititi Spot" is a area smaller in size than a tennis court which has a proven track record from MANY YEARS of fishing of producing trout over 8 pounds.

THE CORICANCHA
Over the years I have given names to once top secret stretches of sand, personal nick names worthy of its secret reputation of consistently producing its hidden riches, such as EL DORADO FLATS from the legendary story of "The Winds of Christmas", some of the best trophy trout fishing that has ever occurred in the Galveston Bay Complex. The subsurface treasures in these Paititi Spots are not chest of Spanish gold, diamonds or pearls, but highly prized shinny logs of silver as long as baseball bats, TROPHY TROUT. The kind of trout that people day dream about when they are at work or at 2am the morning just before the fishing trip and are so pump up with a vision of a 32 inch trout in their head that they can't sleep! Now for a few facts. Most people who fish never have even seen a trout over 8 pounds, much less caught one. However, if your with a guide....."in the know".... that specializes in fishing for big trout, your chances of catching a trout over 7 pounds will go up dramatically. This has been a proven fact year after year though out the Texas bay systems, the jetties, and surfs of Texas.

BONUS BABY TARPON AND REDS
Also caught at cetain times of the year on our big trout trips are baby tarpon. Most of these small tarpon run in size from 3 to 30 pounds. It's not uncommon to catch 5 to 10 of these hard fighting fish when conditions are right. Also, found in the same locations are redfish both slot reds and bull reds up to 50 pounds. All tarpon must be released and we do not recommend retaining the bull reds for eating, however the legal 3 fish a day....per person...slot 20 to 28 inch reds make great table fare as do the smaller trout.

TO MY KNOWLEDGE To my knowledge the largest trout to ever come from the Galveston Bay Complex or surf that was documented and weighed on certified scales was caught by Lanny Meyers from Houston Texas. Meyers trout was caught on the old T-Head Flagship Pier on MAY 3, 1969. The giant trout hit a Bingo Worm and weighed a jaw dropping 13 pounds 2 oz. Lanny claimed his trout for a new Texas State trout record. That fish was the Texas State Record until March 1975, when Mike Blackwood of Corpus broke Meyers' record with a 13 pound 9 oz. fish. The largest stringer of trout --10 TROUT LIMIT -- to come out of the surf side of Galveston Island was caught on the Galveston Jetties with live natural baits by Raymond Berry of Galveston on April 21, 2001. Raymond's 10 trout weighed 73 pounds and were caught during a fishing contest. They were weighed on certified scales at the Galveston Yatch Basin. The largest stinger of trout
-- 10 TROUT LIMIT -- to ever come on the bay side of Galveston Island
was caught by pro fishing guide Capt. Mickey Eastman on November
11, 1989 just before the great freeze of 1989. Eastman was wading
East Galveston Bay along the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge and
that stringer of fish was weighed on a certified scale and all the
fish range in size from 8.72 and 9.93 with a total weight of a 10
trout limit that weighed 93 pounds. Capt. Mickey said that all those
big trout came within 20 yards of where he was standing and all
the fish hit a blue straight back Redfin. I personally had fished
that same location and caught trout up to nine pounds. I also found
the big trout all seemed to be bunch up in one tight area about
the size of a tennis court. I gave that spot a name "The Coricancha"which
means court yard of gold. The largest stinger of trout I ever caught was a -- 20 TROUT LIMIT -- that also came from Galveston's East Bay in December 1983 ,right before the great freeze of 1983, from a location I call "EL DORADO FLATS " which means the golden flats. The 20 trout limit weighed 139 pounds and were weighed by David Marburger, the owner of the old Marburger Sporting Goods on Spencer Highway in Pasadena Texas. Pro guide at the time, in 1983, Wendy Marshall a competitor at the time, was there that night and saw the fish. Marshall's only comment was that's the biggest stringer of trout he had ever seen. At the time I was working for MirrOlure as a field tester and was testing the first MirrOlures ever made that had rattlers in them. Most of the fish were caught on a lure I designed as a field tester, which was a black back, gold sided, orange belly 51 M proto type, field test model MirrOlure, with the new rattlers in the plug. That lure came out the next year and was numbered the 51MR 808 and I named that lure "THE WIDOW MAKER" The catch was also documented the very next day in THE HOUSTON POST newspaper , then came the story of that event in the articles THE WINDS OF CHRISTMAS which appeared in the SALTWATER SPORTSMAN MAGAZINE and also the article, THE LAST TIDE OUT. TO MY KNOWLEDGE the person that has caught more trout over 8 pounds than any man I know from the Galveston area is a long time friend and pro part time fishing guide Sammy Flores of Houston Texas. Sammy Flores is a licenced part time fishing guide who has a full time job, but on his days off prefers to target big trout fishing alone and by himself. Now in this case, I have no doubt about the trout this man has caught over the last 25 years because I was fishing right next to the man running parties with paying customers. Day after day, year after year, I laterally saw Flores catch a lot of those big trout. Before Hurricane IKE there were a lot of days for a whole lot of years that my boat was the only boat on the Jetties, especially in the winter time. Then there would be a lot of days where there would be only two boats on the Galveston jetties. Capt. Sammy Flores' boat and mine. Flores biggest trout was weighed on a certified scales at the Galveston Yatch Basin and weighed 10 pounds 9 oz. Flores was fishing with the legendary harbor master Eddie Barr on New Years Day 2005 and his trout of a lifetime hit a live natural bait. |
